How much does a bookkeeper cost in Adelaide?

Real 2026 numbers — hourly rates, fixed packages, and what actually moves the price.

Quick answer

The short version

In Adelaide, done-for-you bookkeeping typically costs $137–$1,500+ per month on fixed-fee packages, or $50–$90 per hour if billed hourly. Most small businesses land between $249 and $749 a month. What you pay depends on transaction volume, how messy your books are, payroll complexity, and whether you want reporting or just reconciled accounts.

The market

The three ways Adelaide bookkeepers charge

Bookkeeping pricing in Adelaide falls into three models. Knowing which one you're being quoted matters more than the headline number.

1. Hourly ($50–$90/hr). The traditional model. You pay for time, usually invoiced monthly. Fine for irregular work, but the meter runs on every phone call, every "quick question", and every month your volume spikes.

2. Fixed monthly package ($137–$1,500+/mo). One price for a defined scope — typically tiered by transaction volume. This is now the standard for outsourced bookkeeping in Australia: entry packages around $137–$299/mo, mid-tier $449–$749/mo, premium $899–$1,500+/mo for multi-entity or high-volume businesses.

3. Dedicated offshore seat ($1,800–$3,000/mo). A full-time or part-time bookkeeper working only on your business, employed through an outsourcing provider. Different product from done-for-you packages — you're buying capacity, not an outcome. Worth comparing if you need 20+ hours a week of finance work.

Price drivers

What moves your price up or down

Transaction volume. The single biggest driver. A café doing 120 bank lines a month and a wholesaler doing 900 are buying very different amounts of work. Most packages tier on this number — count your average monthly bank and card lines before you get quotes.

Cleanup. If your Xero or MYOB file has unreconciled months, duplicate contacts, or a suspense account full of mysteries, expect a one-off cleanup quote before monthly pricing starts. Any provider that skips this step and starts monthly work on a broken file is doing you no favours.

Payroll. Each pay run adds processing, STP reporting, and super obligations. Businesses with 5+ staff typically sit a tier higher than a sole trader with no employees.

Entities and currencies. Two companies, a trust, or USD/EUR transactions multiply reconciliation and reporting work. This is what pushes businesses into premium tiers.

Reporting. Basic reconciliation plus a P&L is the floor. Monthly management reports with variance commentary, cash-flow forecasts, and budget reviews cost more — and are usually worth it once turnover passes ~$500k.

Watch out

Three traps in Adelaide bookkeeping quotes

The BAS promise. Only a registered BAS agent can lodge BAS. If a provider quotes "BAS included" without being registered with the Tax Practitioners Board, that's not a bargain — it's a compliance risk sitting in your business. The honest version is "BAS-ready ledgers prepared for your BAS agent" — which is exactly what our packages include.

Hourly creep. A $60/hr quote sounds cheap until the monthly invoice lands at $720 because "this month was complex". If you go hourly, insist on a monthly cap or a fixed quote for the defined scope.

Lock-ins. Twelve-month bookkeeping contracts still exist. A provider confident in its work offers cancel-anytime terms. Ask before you sign, not after.

FAQ

Adelaide bookkeeping cost questions

What is the average cost of a bookkeeper in Adelaide?

Most Adelaide small businesses pay $249–$749 per month on a fixed-fee package, or $50–$90 per hour for hourly bookkeeping. Entry packages start around $137/mo; premium services run $900–$1,500+/mo.

Is it cheaper to hire a bookkeeper hourly or on a package?

Packages are usually cheaper once your workload is predictable — 8 hours a month at $70/hr is $560, while an equivalent fixed package runs $299–$499. Hourly suits one-off cleanups; packages suit ongoing monthly work.

Can a bookkeeper lodge my BAS in South Australia?

Only a registered BAS agent can lodge BAS. A bookkeeper can prepare BAS-ready ledgers, but lodgement requires TPB registration. Be wary of any provider promising lodgement without it.

What drives bookkeeping costs up?

Transaction volume first, then messy historical books needing cleanup, payroll complexity, multiple entities or currencies, and whether you want management reporting on top of basic reconciliation.

Are there lock-in contracts on bookkeeping packages?

It depends on the provider. Many fixed-fee services — including FinanceDesk — offer no lock-in with cancel-anytime terms. Always check before signing.
